Local students return as goat show winners
Madison County FFA Goat Show Team member Garrett Whitworth brought back some awards when he competed in the first goat show of the season. More than 70 goats were entered in the competition held at the Charlton County Agriculture Center. Whitworth, a sophomore who has an interest in raising goats, competed in his first show and won fifth- and sixth-place awards in his weight class.
The Madison County Goat Show Team also traveled July 11 to the Banks County Agriculture Center in Homer for another of the season's early competitions.
There were 125 goats - along with their exhibitors - in attendance to compete for the top award of champion goat. Four students were Madison County 4-H or FFA members. Each exhibitor started in showmanship, which is judged on the exhibitor's ability to show his or her goat to the judge and answer questions on projects. Showmanship is divided by age and grade level.
